The viability of generic data recovery tools for digital photo retrieval

If you think that you can recover deleted photos using a general purpose data recovery program you are sadly mistaken. Those programs which are very effective for scanning and recovery of digital image file types such as jpegs are of no use when attempting to recover digital photos that have been stored in the original camera manufacturer’s RAW file format.

Software used to recover deleted photos must be designed specifically to recognize every proprietary camera file extension. And as it happens all of the major camera makers each have their own. Another important factor to consider is that not only must your program for image recovery be matched to your camera but you must also match the program to the operating system used in your computer. What this means is that if you’re using a Windows PC then you must use a photo recovery program that supports Windows. Likewise if you use a Mac your program must support Mac OS X.
